Do juicing fruits and vegetables make you lose weight? As a weight loss nutritionist I get this question often. The answer is that it depends. Juicing and juice cleanses can help you shed a few pounds short term. However the reality is that this is mostly water weight, which comes right back. Based on scientific evidence and my expertise as a Dietitian, juicing is not an ideal way to lose weight.
Although fruits and vegetables confer great health properties, they do not provide your body with the totality of nutrients that your body needs to thrive. They can actually be harmful and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Your body comes equipped with natural detox mechanisms- your liver and kidneys. Therefore, you don’t need to go on a juice cleanse to ‘detox’ or lose weight. Incorporate juices into your diet as an added bonus, and not a sole source of nutrition. I recommend cleansing your diet instead by eliminating processed foods and replacing them with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. If using juice as a supplement to your already healthy eating regimen, you will want to make sure that you include the following ingredients: Cucumbers, celery, carrots, lemon and ginger. These foods have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties – components of which are very crucial for longevity and disease prevention.
